ebaY 1999 Outage Reports

December 1999

Dec 1999

1 Dec - ebaY had a problem with the personal shopper tool for approximate 3 hours today. It did not save new search criteria, so if you added any info between 0500 PT and 1000 PT, you will probably need to go back and redo it. There is an apology of sorts for the last two outages, as both were hardware related. Though happy with the performance of the backup system, they are trying to fix the problems to prevent re-occurrences.

3 Dec - ebaY had a problem with listings produce, the part of the system that updates Listings with new information, such as new items, bids, etc. This part of the system also impacts information in Current, New Today, Ending Today and Going, Going, Gone listings .for approximately 13/4 hours on 2 Dec. Regularly scheduled maintenance took place on the 3rd.

9 Dec - ebaY was unavailable for about 2 hours from 0120 to 0317 PT on 8Dec99. They continue to have excessive down time. So far the back up system has had them running again within 2 hours.Regularly scheduled maintenance on Friday 10 Dec 99 00:01 PST and 06:00 PST. They have an Unregularly scheduled maintenance on the personal shopper, between 23:00 PST, 8 Dec and 01:00 PST, December 9

17 Dec - ebaY conducted its regularly scheduled maintenance from 0100 to 0500 PT on Friday morning, and are also doing an UnRegularly scheduled maintenance from 0100-0500 PT Sat 18 Dec 99. ebaY will extend all auctions originally scheduled to end between 0100 and 0600 PT by 24 hours. This is the first of several major database changes to allow for growth and scalability. They are separating the customer account data from the rest of the database. These changes might cause some unexpected performance issues, so they will have additional staff on duty just in case. We really feel that ebaY is being a bit blind to its sellers needs, given this weekend is probably the last chance of someone buying a gift, and getting it in time for christmas. Could they have not delayed this update until next week?

19 Dec - ebaY has been having problems with end of auction notices. The notices were running about 1 1/2 days behind, but they have fixed the underlying cause and think the notices should be current soon.

21 Dec - Bay had a free listing day on 20 Dec (again we really apologize about not notifying our subscribers), which caused some QUOTE performance issues ENDQUOTE for about a half hour from 2130 to 2200 PT. The site was running very slowly all day, particularly from the listing end of things, as folks scurried to load their free listings. With total listings having dropped about 1.5 million over the last few weeks, this free listings day helped the site recover to a current total of 2,959,681. This is well off the high of approx 4.13 million following the free listing day in September, but is still more than double the number listings of any other online auction site. ebaY will be down for two Unregular scheduled maintenance times Fri 31Dec 1999 1530 to 1800 PT and 2300 Fri 31 Dec to 0300 PT Sat 1Jan 2000, but have canceled their regularly scheduled maintenance from 0100-0500 PT Fri 31Dec. They will be validating work performed in preparation for the year 2000, and to perform routine maintenance on the database and make one last Y2K-related check.

28 Dec - ebaY has had intermittent search problems over the past few days. Though un-noted on the announcement boards, several subscribers have reported in and confirmed our findings. When doing a search, you come up with varied and inconsistent results. After reloading refreshing a couple of times, it will usually work, but only if you persist. At approx 1642 PT the site had some problems requiring rebooting of the Standby server. No further information available.
