Dec 1999

Nov - ebaY US ñ was down from approx 10:00PT to 13:45PT, and all auctions ending from 11:30PT to 13:34PT were extended 24 hours even though not required by the ebaY extension policy.

Nov - ebaY has had repeated outages during the past three days. Their explanation was that there was a hardware problem, so they moved the site over to the warm backup site, and are fixing the problems. We take back ‡ of a Gold star from Michael Wilson because some of the language used was obfuscation, and would have been better if it was plain truth. Performance issues INDEED !!!!!

Nov - ebaY has had repeated outages during the past three days. They are blaming it on unusual loads, caused by server problems. They also state that one of the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that connects to ebaY has had Internet traffic routing problems since Sunday, causing network connections to ebaY to time out. ebaY has notified the ISP, and rerouted their traffic to avoid the faulty ISP.

Nov - Regularly scheduled maintenance 00:00 PT through 04:00 PT. This will shift to 01:00 PT 05:00 PT on 14 Nov. ebaY has had ongoing problems and outages during the past few weeks. At 11:55 PT today the pic server went down, preventing all ebaY icons from loading. In a situation such as this, the best thing to do once the text has loaded is to hit stop, and then navigate via the text bar at the bottom of the ebaY page. This problem continued up until the shutdown for the regularly scheduled downtime.

Nov - continues to have lot of glitches and problems, but has nothing reported on the announcement board about them. Todays noted problems have been strange error messages that come up particularly when you access feedback, and some search functions. Usually if you hit refresh/reload, the page will come up. Also when you list you will sometimes get a quote-warning-unable to send listing confirmation notice ñendquote There are also continuing reports about problems with pics coming up on listings.

Nov - is having search indexing problems. Search indexing was behind approximately 2 days. The problem was identified and fixed at approx 0530 PT and updated through Friday. It will take several update cycles to bring everything up to date and current.

Nov - Continues to have indexing problems. Though ebaY claims that everything is up to date and current - within normal parameters, user after user complain about how their auctions are not showing in search. This has been an ongoing complaint that ebaY has yet to address, using any of the hundreds of suggestions they have received about this issue.

Nov - will be down for an un-regularly scheduled maintenance Sunday 21 Nov between 01:00 PST and 05:00 PST. They will extend all auctions scheduled to end between 0100 and 0600 on Sunday, by 24 hours.

Nov - The feedback system went down today, Mon for a while but was quickly restored, and there were also intermittent problems of site accessibility on Sun due to the resetting of load balance during the maintenance downtime on Sun morning.

Nov - Personal Shopper is down for an hour from 2300 to 2400 PT for maintenance.

Nov - ebaY has made changes to search , and now claim that search cycles are currently running at around 2 hours, their service level target is less than 4 hrs. There is also an explanation of why it is so difficult for them to keep search updated, and for the first time in print a statement that Quote our Search indexing cycles have been taking about 12 hours to complete Endquote Regularly scheduled maintenance Friday 0100 PT to 0500 PT

Nov - ebaY was down for approximately 2 hours on Sat morning. No extensions were given, but anyone who feels their auctions were adversely impacted should request refunds of final value fees. http://pages.ebaY.com/services/buyandsell/finalfee.html They also had what they called a network issue at 11:17 left coast time, that lasted about 20 minutes. Then at around 14:00 PT the Gallery went down for 11 hours. Anyone who received a message that your Gallery image is not appearing, you need to re-enter your image URL information. http://cgi5.ebaY.com/aw-cgi/ebaYISAPI.dll?DisplayGalleryImagePage Finally they report that the hot backup system, what they call their high-availability system is now in place and has been fully operational for the past seven days. The outage on Saturday forced a failover (new term? ebaY speak?) to the high-availability system. They consider the failover successful, as they feel the system dramatically improved their recovery time from the outage. ebaY thinks that as they gain more experience with the new system, they expect recovery times to continue to improve. ebaY will provide a detailed information on the system in next months Tech update. Will this system guarantee that no outage will be longer than 2 hours and 59 minutes?

Nov - ebaY Is taking a one hour unregular scheduled maintenance from 0100 PT to 0200 PT, on Wednesday 1 Dec. There is no mention of extending auctions. ebaY had an approximate 3/4 hour outage, and was brought back on line by the backup system. This is a big improvement over the two hour time lag the other night, and we hope this becomes better as time goes by.
